Softbaiting: A Practical Guide
A practical starting guide to rigging a softbait, controlling its sink, and using a measured retrieve.

What you need
Use a rod and reel suited to the water, a balanced main line and leader, a softbait, and a jig head that can reach the depth you intend to fish. Carry pliers and keep hooks covered when not in use.
Before you start
Choose bait size and jig-head weight for the target, depth, and current. A lighter head sinks slowly; a heavier one reaches depth sooner but can make the lure track unnaturally. Check that the method is permitted at your location.
Steps
1. Rig the softbait
Thread the bait straight onto the hook so it sits centred and does not bunch up. Keep the hook point clear enough to work as intended.
2. Cast and let it sink
Cast to open water and follow the line with a light connection. Watch for the line to slow or slacken as the lure descends; avoid letting loose line drift into hazards.
3. Lift, pause, and retrieve
Lift the rod tip smoothly, pause to let the bait sink, then wind in slack. Repeat at a controlled pace and change one part of the retrieve at a time.
Check your result
The bait should travel without spinning and return with the hook and plastic still aligned. Notice whether you can feel the bottom or identify the sink before changing weight or retrieve.
Troubleshooting
If the bait twists, re-rig it straight. If you lose contact, check line slack and consider a slightly heavier head. If it snags often, shorten the sink or fish above the obstruction.
Safety and regulations
Keep hooks clear of hands and other people, cast only when the area behind you is clear, and take damaged soft plastics and discarded line away. Check current local rules before fishing.
