Lure Retrieve: Speed, Depth, and Action

Build a controlled lure retrieve by testing a baseline speed, depth, and action before making small adjustments.

What you need

Choose a lure suited to your target and water, matched to a rod, reel, line, and leader that you can cast and control comfortably.

Before you start

Check the lure's intended action and the depth available. Start where you can see or feel how it works, and keep a safe casting area clear.

Steps

1. Establish a steady baseline

Cast to a consistent distance and retrieve at an even pace. This gives you a useful reference before experimenting.

2. Watch the lure and line

Notice whether the lure tracks cleanly, reaches the intended depth, and stays connected to the line. A sudden change can be a strike, weed, or snag.

3. Change one variable

Try a slower or faster wind, a pause, or a different depth. Keep the other parts of the presentation steady long enough to compare results.

Check your result

Look for a consistent lure action and enough line contact to detect changes. Record what you tried so a useful adjustment can be repeated.

Troubleshooting

If the lure spins or fouls, check its rigging and retrieve speed. If you cannot reach the zone, adjust casting angle or lure choice before adding excessive weight.

Safety and regulations

Check behind and beside you before casting, keep hooks controlled during changes, and follow local rules for hooks, lures, and access.
