Trout Lures: Find a Retrieve That Feels Right
Work a lure at a controlled pace, cover different depths, and let water clarity guide your next adjustment.

Cover water methodically
For lake fishing, cast a spoon or spinner across a drop-off, then retrieve at a steady pace that lets the lure work. In rivers, cast across or slightly upstream and keep the lure moving naturally with the flow.
Try different depths before switching lures. A small adjustment to retrieve speed can be easier to assess than changing colour, size, and location all at once.
Respect freshwater rules
Use barbless hooks where required, keep fish wet if you plan to release them, and minimise time out of the water. Avoid trampling banks or disturbing spawning areas.
Trout seasons, licences, and permitted methods vary by region. Check the current Fish & Game regulations for your water.
