Surfcasting: A Shore-Fishing Guide
Read the beach, prepare a suitable shore setup, and cast with care when surfcasting.

What you need
Use a rod and reel intended for shore casting, a rig and sinker suited to the beach, and clothing and safety gear appropriate for weather and water conditions.
Before you start
Check the forecast, tide, access, and local fishing rules. Observe the beach for a safe route, changing waves, channels, and other people before assembling tackle.
Steps
1. Read the beach
Watch several sets of waves and note where water moves back out, where deeper-looking channels may lie, and how wind affects the shore. These are clues, not guarantees.
2. Set up and cast safely
Assemble the rod on stable ground and check every direction for people and obstacles. Use a controlled cast you can repeat; never cast over swimmers or other anglers.
3. Hold position and adjust
Keep the line organised and watch for movement. If the rig rolls or collects weed, adjust sinker shape, position, or timing rather than adding weight automatically.
Check your result
A useful position is safe to reach and leave, lets you manage the line, and does not interfere with other beach users. Reassess when surf or weather changes.
Troubleshooting
If the rig moves, try a more suitable sinker or cast angle. If weed builds up, inspect the line more often or shift to clearer water. Stop if conditions become unsafe.
Safety and regulations
Keep well back from unstable edges and large surf, never turn your back on the sea, and let someone know your plan. Follow access guidance and current local fishing rules.
