Softbaiting: A Simple First Retrieve

Learn a repeatable cast, sink, lift, and pause that keeps a softbait in touch with the water below.

Set up for feel

Choose a softbait and jig head suited to your target, depth, and current. A weight that is too heavy can plough through the bottom; too light, and you may lose contact before the lure reaches the zone you want to fish.

After casting, keep a light connection to the line as the lure sinks. Watching the line can help you notice its descent and detect an unexpected stop.

Try lift, pause, and wind

Once the lure is down, lift the rod tip smoothly, let the lure sink again, and take up slack without dragging it continuously. Repeat through the water column, then change the pause or retrieve speed if the presentation is not drawing interest.

Keep hooks clear of fingers, and dispose of damaged soft plastics responsibly rather than leaving them on the shore.
