Kingfish: Livebait Basics and Safe Practice

A considered approach to livebait presentation, strong tackle, and handling a powerful fish responsibly.

Target species: kingfish

Prepare before the bite

Kingfish are powerful fish that can quickly reach reef, kelp, or other line hazards. Use tackle with enough strength for the place you are fishing, set your drag before presenting a bait, and make sure everyone aboard understands the plan.

If using livebait, keep it healthy in an aerated tank and use only bait species and methods permitted in your area. A lively, well-presented bait is more useful than a complicated rig.

Prioritise control and care

Keep the line clear of people and obstacles, communicate during the fight, and avoid leaning over rails or reaching near hooks. Have release tools ready if you intend to return a fish.

Kingfish rules and protected areas can change. Confirm current regulations and local guidance before your trip.
