Gurnard: A Steady Bottom-Fishing Approach

Keep a bait close to the bottom, stay organised, and let a steady drift do some of the work.

Target species: gurnard

Stay near the bottom

Gurnard are commonly targeted with bait presentations near the seabed. A simple ledger-style rig can keep bait in the zone while allowing you to adjust sinker weight to depth and drift speed.

Use a hook that suits your bait and target size, and check that the point remains exposed after each re-bait. A clean, compact bait is easier to manage than an oversized bundle.

Make the drift count

Keep track of your drift and reset when the boat has moved well away from the productive water. On shore, fan casts across different distances so you can work out where the bottom and current change.

Always follow local fishing rules, and avoid anchoring or casting where it creates a hazard.
