Fishing responsibly
Practical guidance for safer, lawful, and lower-impact fishing, with links to New Zealand rules and field guides.

Conditions, access, and regulations vary between fisheries. Plan for the water you are visiting, check current official advice, and make conservative choices when conditions or rules are unclear.
Safety
Check weather, tides, river levels, and access before setting out. Tell someone your plan, carry suitable clothing and communication equipment, and avoid exposed rocks, unsafe wading, or surf beyond your ability. Keep hooks and casts clear of other people.
Regulations
Rules can differ by region and change over time. Confirm the area, species, season, size and bag limits, closures, and permitted methods before fishing; do not rely on an old note or a general guide as legal advice.
For New Zealand, check the current recreational fishing rules from the Ministry for Primary Industries.
Species care
Keep only fish you intend and are allowed to use. Handle fish with wet hands, minimise time out of water, use appropriate tools, and release unwanted fish promptly where practical. Follow species-specific guidance and local rules.
Environmental impact
Pack out line, hooks, bait scraps, and soft plastics. Avoid damaging banks, vegetation, reefs, or spawning areas; respect wildlife and other water users; and use established access routes. Do not move live bait or aquatic organisms between waters.
